Population Non-Hispanic Black % by Zip Code (ZCTA5) — Detroit Metro

NOTE: Gray indicates insufficient data or a suppressed estimate.

The Detroit metro area exhibits stark racial segregation, with zip codes in and immediately surrounding the city of Detroit proper displaying Non-Hispanic Black population shares frequently exceeding 50% and often approaching 100%, forming a dense yellow cluster in the central-east portion of the map. Surrounding suburban communities such as Livonia, Farmington Hills, Sterling Heights, and the southern exurbs register substantially lower percentages, generally below 10-15%, creating a sharp demographic boundary between the urban core and outer ring. Notable exceptions to this suburban pattern include pockets of moderate-to-high Black population percentages extending northwest from Detroit toward Southfield and into parts of Warren and the area south of Dearborn, suggesting ongoing demographic shifts along key corridors.
