Household Average Size by Zip Code (ZCTA5) — North Carolina

NOTE: Gray indicates insufficient data or a suppressed estimate.

Larger household sizes of 3.0 or above cluster in suburban zip codes ringing Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, as well as in parts of Robeson County in the south-central region, likely reflecting family-oriented communities with newer housing stock. In contrast, the lowest average household sizes—often below 2.0—appear in mountain resort and college-town zip codes in the western part of the state, downtown urban cores, and along portions of the Outer Banks where seasonal and retirement populations predominate. A broad swath of the rural Coastal Plain and Piedmont generally falls in the 2.3–2.7 range, with scattered bright yellow outliers suggesting localized pockets of multigenerational or larger-family housing.
