Household Average Size by Zip Code (ZCTA5) — Boston Metro

NOTE: Gray indicates insufficient data or a suppressed estimate.

Central Boston zip codes exhibit the smallest average household sizes in the metro area, dropping to approximately 1.5–1.8 persons per household, consistent with the prevalence of student housing, young professionals, and smaller rental units in neighborhoods like Back Bay, Beacon Hill, and the downtown core. Household sizes increase markedly in the outer suburban ring, particularly in the western and northwestern communities beyond Waltham and in pockets south of Quincy, where averages reach 2.8–3.2, reflecting more family-oriented, single-family housing stock. A notable outlier cluster appears in the far northwest corner of the metro area, where one zip code reaches the highest values on the scale (~3.5), while Lynn also stands out on the North Shore with an elevated average relative to its immediate coastal neighbors.
