The vast majority of upstate New York zip codes report U.S. citizenship rates above 95% among the adult population, creating a largely uniform yellow expanse across the northern and western portions of the state. A sharp contrast emerges in the New York City metropolitan area and Long Island, where citizenship rates drop significantly—with clusters in parts of Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx falling to 75–85%, reflecting the concentration of immigrant communities in these urban centers. Scattered pockets of lower citizenship rates also appear around mid-Hudson Valley communities and select college towns or urban centers upstate, such as areas near Syracuse, Ithaca, and Binghamton, though these remain far less pronounced than the downstate pattern.
